Ladimer.com is especially excited to offer young writers the opportunity to showcase their creative talent. We are sponsoring a contest for high school juniors and seniors. Participants will have their short stories read on-line by a wide audience, and the winners will be awarded scholarships, gaining the attention of college administrators.

To qualify, a student must be a college-bound high school junior or senior enrolled in a public, private, or charter school, or a recognized home-school program. Each student must complete an application and release form. It is not necessary for a student to have a teacher sponsor in order to enter. THERE IS NO ENTRY FEE.

Participants will be required to submit up to three fictional short stories. Submissions must be the sole product of the student’s efforts and must adhere to the following criteria:

FIRST SUBMISSION
Create an original short story of no more than 2,000 words entitled “The Box.”
The story may be of any genre or point of view, but must relate to the title.
Submissions must be received no later than January 31, 2011.

From the submissions received, a jury will choose 50 stories that best demonstrate skillful writing, originality, authenticity, and an ability to capture a reader’s interest.

The 50 submissions chosen will be posted on Ladimer.com on February 15. Readers on the site may vote for their favorite from March 1 to March 15. The 25 stories with the greatest number of votes will be posted on the site March 16, and those students will move to the second round of the competition.

SECOND SUBMISSION (25 participants in total.)
Create an original short story between 1,000 and 3,000 words that begins with the following line: “Mom! The cat died – again.”
The story may be of any genre or point of view, but must logically follow the opening line. The title of the story will be of the student’s own choosing.
Submissions must be received no later than April 1, 2011.

Stories submitted by the 25 remaining students will be posted on April 5. Readers may vote for their favorite story from April 11 to April 17. The 10 stories with the greatest number of votes will be posted on the site April 18, and those students will move to the third and final round of the competition.

THIRD & FINAL SUBMISSION (10 participants in total.)
Create an original short story between 1,000 and 3,000 words entitled “Positive.”
The story may be of any genre or point of view, but must relate to the title.
Submissions must be received no later than May 1, 2011.

Stories submitted by the 10 remaining students will be posted on May 3. Readers may vote for their favorite story through May 13. The submissions with the greatest number of votes will be posted on the site May 16, 2011, and awarded the following prizes:

In addition, there will be FIVE honorable mentions for outstanding writing awarded by the editors of Ladimer.com.

The teacher responsible for the greatest number of student entries will receive the choice of a Sony Reader or Amazon Kindle. In addition, Ladimer.com will print the collection of work from that school’s participating students. The hardbound book will be presented to the school library in honor of that teacher’s participation and dedication.

Students are to submit the completed application, signed release, and the short story described in Paragraph 1 above, no later than January 31, 2011. Any submission suspected of plagiarism will automatically be disqualified.
